Smart notifications let you send email notifications to yourself or others when a survey response meets a set of conditions, called a trigger. Conditions can be based on specific survey answers or custom variable. Each trigger can have multiple conditions, which must all be met for a smart notification to send. Smart notifications won't trigger for disqualified responses.

Only survey owners can manage smart notifications and their conditions, but you can share smart notifications with others, too. We send an email to let them know.

Smart notifications are survey-specific. If you have multiple surveys you want to receive notifications for, you need to create smart notifications for each one. You can set up to 10 smart notifications per survey.

When you create a smart notification, you can send email alerts to yourself and others. You and any recipients get an email every time a survey response is submitted that matches the trigger you set up.

The email has a link to view the individual response, which people can see without logging in to a SurveyMonkey account. The link stays active for 90 days after the notification is sent.

To create a smart notification:

  1. From Home, select … next to the survey or go to the Publish survey section of your survey.
  2. Select Manage Notifications.
  3. Select the + Create button next to Smart notifications.
  4. Choose your trigger criteria. These are the question and custom variable conditions that need to be met for a notification to send.
  5. (Optional) Select +Condition to add another condition to the same trigger. By default, this links your conditions with AND logic. If you want to use OR logic instead, select the AND button to change it. It's not possible to combine AND/OR logic in the same trigger. Repeat to add additional conditions to the single trigger.
  6. Select Add Recipients to share the notification with others. When you share smart notifications with someone, they’ll get an email to let them know.
  7. If you want to receive the notification, check the Include myself as a recipient box.
  8. (Optional) Customize the subject line and message of your email so recipients know why they're getting the notification.
  9. Select Save.
