SurveyMonkey's Tableau integration lets you set up an extract to export survey responses and quiz results to Tableau Desktop using a Web Data Connector. You need Tableau Desktop version 10.1.6 or greater to use this integration.

To connect your data to Tableau, you'll need to install the WDC 3.0 connector.

To install the connector:

  1. Open your survey, then go to the Connect Apps section.
  2. Search for the Tableau integration, then select Details.
  3. Select Install to download the connector (the "taco" file). The file will end with a .taco extension.
  4. Place the .taco file in the following directory:
    • Windows - C:\Users\[Windows User]\Documents\My Tableau Repository\Connectors
    • macOS - /Users/[user]/Documents/My Tableau Repository/Connectors
  5. Restart Tableau Desktop.

If you're connecting SurveyMonkey to Tableau for the first time, skip this step.

If you have workbook that uses the existing Tableau WDC 2.0 connector, you'll need to change your data source to the new Tableau WDC 3.0 connector. If you connected your workbook to SurveyMonkey before September 30, 2025, you're likely using the Tableau WDC 2.0 connector. Learn how to change data sources in Tableau.

  1. Launch Tableau Desktop.
  2. Under Connect, find the To a Server section, then select SurveyMonkey by SurveyMonkey. You may need to select More under To a Server to find it.
  3. Sign in to your SurveyMonkey account and authorize Tableau to extract the data.
  4. Find the survey you want to connect, then select Import Survey.
  5. Choose the questions and data you want to analyze in Tableau. You can also use Filters to find and select specific data.
  6. Select Import to bring your data into Tableau.

While creating a new extract or reviewing an existing one, you can filter the extract if you want to include only certain kinds of responses.

You can filter extracts by collector, status, or metadata.

  • Collector: Choose the collectors you want to include in your extract.
  • Status: Choose the response statuses to include in your extract.
  • Metadata: Enter or define the respondent metadata associated with responses to include in your extract, like responses that took longer than a minute or from a particular IP Address.

If you're using Windows, you may encounter a pop-up asking for your Tableau Server credentials after installing and launching the Tableau WDC 3.0 connector.

If you are asked for your credentials again, follow the workaround below to prevent this pop-up from displaying in the future. You can complete these steps before or after installing the connector.

To disable the credentials pop-up:

  1. If you’re using a Windows device, install WMIC.
  2. On your keyboard, press Win + R.
    1. Type in gpedit.msc.
    2. Select Enter.
  3. Go to User Configuration.
    1. Select Administrative Templates.
    2. Select System.
  4. Double-click Prevent access to registry editing tools.
    1. Select Disabled.
    2. Select Apply.
    3. Select OK.

Once done, relaunch the Tableau WDC 3.0 connector.
