Creating a Web Link

To create a Web Link:

  1. Go to the Collect Responses section of your survey.
  2. Choose Get Web Link. (If you already have a collector for your survey, click Add New Collector from the top-right corner of the collector list.)
  3. Choose your collector options.
  4. Edit the nickname of the collector by clicking the pencil icon in the dark grey bar at the top left of the page—this nickname does not show to respondents.
  5. Copy the survey link and paste it wherever you'd like. The link works as long as the collector is open—Web Link Collectors are open by default.

Your survey URL looks something like this example by default, with a string of letters and numbers at the end:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/P58B9BX

You can also download a QR code for your survey to print on pamphlets, flyers, or posters.

Sending a multilingual survey? Use the language specific links to send your survey in the language your respondents are most comfortable with.

Your Web Link Collector URL is a public link, meaning that anyone who has it will be able to access your survey and complete it. Web crawlers can also access public links, and may index your survey on a search engine.

If you wish to use a Web Link Collector but do not want the link to be public, consider password-protecting your survey.

Collector Options

Depending on your plan, you can create a Custom URL Ending or use the White Label URL to remove SurveyMonkey branding from your web link. If you customize the URL after you send the survey out, both the old link and the new link will work.

You can’t create a Custom URL Ending if you have the Recurrence collector option turned on.

Tracking Respondents

If you want to track respondents, please review our tracking methods before sending your survey.

By default, Web Link Collectors record IP addresses. However, this information can't really help you track respondents. Instead, you can add required questions to your survey to collect identifying information from respondents, or you can use Custom Variables.

Alternatively, you can use an Email Invitation instead of a Web Link to track respondents.

Create a Copy of a Web Link

BETA FEATURE: Copying a Web Link collector is only available to some paid customers with English accounts and who don't store their data in the EU data center.

Copying a collector creates a new Web Link with most of your customized collector options. The only collector options that aren't carried over to the copy are the Thumbnail image, Password Protection, and Recurrence options—but you can manually update those collector options after you create a copy.

To create a copy of a Web Link collector:

  1. From the collector list, click . next to the Web Link collector you want to copy.
  2. Select Copy Collector.

A new Web Link starting with Copy of is added to your collector list.

The Web Link collector is the fastest and most versatile way to share your survey link and collect responses. It will generate a short URL and QR Code that you can post wherever you'd like.
