Previewing & Testing Surveys

Before sending a survey, try it out in Preview & Test first to make sure everything's working as expected. You can access Preview & Test at the top of the Design Survey section of your survey. There are some restrictions when editing a live survey, so it's helpful to uncover any issues in your survey design before real respondents encounter them.

Accessing Preview & Test Mode

Using the Preview & Test feature lets you test everything you've added to your survey from the Design Survey page.

To preview and test your survey design:

  1. Go to the Design Survey section of your survey.
  2. At the top of the page, click Preview & Test. A new window opens for you to preview the survey.
  3. Check that the logic or features you may have in your survey design are functioning properly, like Skip Logic, answer validation, required questions, or piping.
  4. Toggle between Desktop, Tablet, and Phone in the bottom-left corner to preview the survey on different devices. We suggest going through the entire survey in each mode.
TIP! If there's Advanced Piping or Advanced Branching based on Custom Data or Custom Variables in your survey, you can't test this functionality from Preview & Test. See Testing Advanced Piping or Testing Advanced Branching for details.

Collaborating & Getting Feedback

You can share the preview link with others to get feedback on your survey. This shares a preview mode for the survey that allows people to test out the survey design. Survey responses aren't recorded in preview mode, so be sure to create a Web Link when you're ready to collect responses!

To share the Preview & Test mode with others:

  1. Go to the Design Survey section of your survey.
  2. At the top of the page, click Preview & Test. A new window opens with the survey preview.
  3. Now you have a few options: copy and paste the URL in the address bar and share it how you'd like, or invite people to comment.
TIP! If you're in a team, you can share surveys with collaborators and give them full editing access to your survey.

Creating a Test Collector

Since Preview & Test doesn't account for collector options, creating a test collector gives you a more comprehensive understanding of the entire survey experience from start to finish.

In addition to taking the survey itself, test collectors allow you record test responses and view test responses in the Analyze Results section, so you can see how your data will be displayed before you send out the survey and make any adjustments to the design as needed.

To create a test collector:

  1. Create a Web Link for the survey. This creates a URL for you to take the survey.
  2. Click W in the upper-left corner of the collector and rename it "Test Collector" so you don't confuse it with your real collectors.
  3. From the collector options, turn onĀ MultipleĀ Responses. This will allow you to test the survey more than once.
  4. Review the remaining collector options.
  5. Copy the URL you in step one and paste it in your browser's address bar.
  6. Take the survey.
  7. See how the results display in the Analyze Results section of the survey.
  8. Make edits to the survey design or collector options, as needed.
  9. Clear the responses from the collector once you're done testing so they don't interfere with your survey results.
TIP! If you're using Email Invitation, you can send a test email from the Schedule page to preview how the message appears in your email client.
Click Preview & Test at the top of the Design Survey page to make sure the flow and settings are working as expected. You may also want to create a collector to try out the entire survey experience as a respondent would.
