Build with AI, powered by the Azure OpenAI service and OpenAI, makes it easy and quick to create a survey.

To create a survey, type a prompt that includes your survey goals but excludes sensitive information. With a click of a button, we'll generate a survey for you. You can choose to use it and edit it, re-generate a new survey with an edited prompt, or start over with another survey creation method.

How Your Data is Processed

Build with AI uses the Azure OpenAI service and OpenAI to generate your survey. Your data isn't used to train the Azure OpenAI service or OpenAI models. Learn how this feature processes your data.

Avoid including any sensitive information in your prompts—you are responsible for the information you enter into Build with AI. Please note that the Azure OpenAI service and OpenAI do not use prompts in connection with Build with AI to train Azure OpenAI service and OpenAI models or improve OpenAI’s service offering.

Feature Availability and Settings

Build with AI is only available to some customers in the supported regions.
Build with AI isn’t available to HIPAA-enabled accounts or those with the Enhanced Sensitive Data Protection feature enabled.

Build with AI settings aren’t available in the SurveyMonkey mobile app. Sign in on a desktop device to edit your settings.

Build a Survey with AI

To create a survey with Build with AI:

Select Create Survey.
Select Build with AI.
Enter a prompt. We recommend using one of the examples as a template, but you can also write your own prompt from scratch.
If you use the SurveyMonkey app, you can choose to use voice commands or type your survey prompt.
Submit the prompt to generate a survey.
Preview your survey. If you want to use it, select Continue to edit and customize the survey. Otherwise, you can Try another prompt or start over with another survey creation method.

Limitations

Survey prompts can be up to 50,000 characters long.

You can submit up to 25 AI-generated survey prompts per hour. The number of prompts per hour may be lower before signing into SurveyMonkey.

Your Survey Content

AI-generated surveys may include any of the following question types:

Multiple choice
Checkbox
NPS
Name
Email
Address
Phone
Single Textbox
Matrix/Rating Scale
Ranking
Star Rating

Once you choose to use the survey and you're customizing it, you can add in other question types. If your survey includes paid question types, you can upgrade to keep them or remove them to send your survey for free.

Certain survey use cases are not permitted—for details, please see SurveyMonkey's Acceptable Uses Policy, as well as additional third-party provider usage policies, and acceptable use and conduct policies.

How to Write a Prompt to Generate a Survey

State your goal (e.g., we want to improve the employee experience).
Describe what you want to know (e.g., we need to survey our employees about pay, benefits, hours, workload, and culture).
Provide general context describing who is sending the survey (e.g., we're a large sporting goods manufacturer).
Specify what demographic or company information you want to know about your respondents (e.g., business industry and size, or age and gender).
Be specific and as detailed as possible about the desired context, outcome, length, or style.
Be precise—avoid ambiguity or vagueness.
Iterate on your prompt until you get a survey draft you can work with.

If your prompt contains unsafe content, you may receive an error or be unable to create an AI-generated survey for up to an hour. You can create a survey in another way or wait to retry Build with AI with an edited prompt.

Mobile App Experience

When using Build with AI in the SurveyMonkey app, you can use voice commands to create your survey prompt rather than typing it out. The app uses native OS speech-to-text to capture your voice prompts. Voice prompts are not stored in SurveyMonkey – only the prompt’s text output is stored.

Once survey questions are proposed on the preview page, you can Continue to edit and customize your survey. Or, select Try another prompt to revise your prompt.
