Commenting on a Survey

You can invite people to comment on both your survey design in Preview & Test and your survey results via a shared data page. This makes it easier to collaborate right in SurveyMonkey, rather than emailing comments and feedback back-and-forth to one another.

TIP! Anyone you invite needs to sign in to a SurveyMonkey account to post a comment. If someone you invite doesn't have an account, they can sign up for free. If you're in a team, you can share a survey with anyone in your team to give them full editing access.

Inviting People to Comment on Your Survey Design

When you invite someone to comment on your survey design, you're sharing your survey in preview mode. This mode allows people to test out the survey design and comment on the questions. Survey responses will not be recorded in preview mode.

If you're on a team, you can only invite people to comment by email if you're the survey owner. If you're a survey collaborator with full editing access to the survey, you're considered a commenter and not the survey owner.

To invite someone to comment on your survey's design by email:

  1. Go to the Design Survey section of your survey.
  2. At the top of the page, click Preview & Test.
  3. In the upper-right corner of the survey preview, click U.
  4. Make sure commenting is turned on.
  5. Click Invite. You can invite people in your team, or you can invite any email address.

You can also copy the URL from the address bar to share your preview with others! Anyone with the preview link can see comments, and anyone with the link who's also signed into a SurveyMonkey account can leave comments.

Inviting People to Comment on Your Results

The easiest way to invite people to comment on your survey's results is to give them a link to a shared data page that has commenting turned on. You can also invite people by email directly from your shared data page.

To invite someone to comment on your survey's results by email:

  1. Create a shared data page in the Analyze results section of your survey.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the shared data page, click U.
  3. Make sure commenting is turned on.
  4. Click Invite. You can invite people in your team, or you can invite any email address.

When commenting is turned on, anyone logged into a SurveyMonkey account with the link to your page can see and leave comments.

If you'd like to restrict access, you can choose to make your page Password Restricted or turn the page off by turning sharing off for the page. You can also create a new shared data page for the survey with commenting turned off to share your results without comments or the ability for others to add comments.

Turning Commenting On or Off

You can turn commenting on or off at any time.

If you're on a team, you can only turn commenting on or off if you're the survey owner. If you're a survey collaborator with full editing access to the survey, you're considered a commenter and not the survey owner.

To turn commenting off:

  1. Go to preview and test or the shared data page.
  2. In the upper-right corner, click U.
  3. Turn commenting on or off. Changes are saved automatically.

When commenting is off, you and existing commenters can continue to see comments that haven't been deleted or resolved. However, you can't invite more people to comment, post new comments, reply to comments, delete comments, or resolve comments.

Commenting on a Survey or Shared Data Page

You can comment on a preview of a survey or a shared data page if you’re invited by the survey owner via email, or if someone shared a direct link with you.

To view or make comments:

  1. In the upper-right corner of the survey preview or shared data page, click w to hide or display commenting.
  2. Click w next to each question to see existing comments or to add a new comment.
  3. Post the comment. You'll need to log in to your SurveyMonkey account to save the post. If you don't have an account, you'll be given the option to create a free account.

Survey owners and commenters can see all comments, write new comments, reply to comments, edit their own comments, or delete their own comments or comment threads they started.

Survey owners can resolve comment threads or delete any comments.

TIP! The preview mode lets you test the survey design and leave comments on questions. In order to make edits to the survey yourself, you need to be part of the survey owner's team. If the survey owner has a team plan, you can click the Request Access button at the bottom-right of the preview page to send an email request to the survey owner to join their team. If they don't have a team plan, you won't see this button, and they won't be able to share editing access with anyone else.

Email Notifications

Survey Owners

If you have response alerts turned on, you'll get an email notification for each comment or reply to a comment left on your survey or your shared data page. You'll also receive an alert anytime someone deletes one of their comments.

Commenters

You'll get an email notification when people reply to comments you've left, leave comments on threads you're part of, or if your comment is resolved or deleted by the survey owner.

Opting Out

You can opt out of commenting alerts directly from one of the email notifications—just click the link to manage alerts for this survey. If you want to opt back in later, the same link in the email notification will allow you to re-activate commenting notifications for that survey.

You can invite people to comment in Preview & Test. This shares a preview mode for the survey that allows people to test out the survey design and comment on the questions.
