Changing the Survey Language
Changing your survey language switches certain default survey text—like navigation buttons and the survey end page—to another language. For the rest of your survey, like the title and questions, you need to provide your own translations.
To change the survey language:
- Click the Design Survey tab.
- In the left sidebar, click Options.
- Click Language.
- Select a language from the dropdown.
What's Translated
We provide translations for the following default survey text in over 50 survey languages:
- Navigation buttons
- Preset answer choice labels for "Other" textboxes
- Preset answer choice labels for Net Promoter Score, Date/Time, and Contact Information questions
- Powered by SurveyMonkey footer
- The standard Survey End Page
- Question Bank (only some languages supported)
- Error messages on required questions or questions with validation (added after you changed the survey language)
Updating Error Messages for Questions with Validation
When you make a question required or add validation to a question, we automatically add an error message in the current survey language. Error messages let survey takers know if they fill out a question in the wrong format, or if they skip a required question.
When you change the survey language, error messages for existing questions do not automatically update to the new language, so you'll need to go back and update them.
To update existing error messages to match the new survey language:
- In the Design Survey section, click a question to edit it.
- Click the Options tab.
- Deselect the Require an Answer to This Question or Validate Answer for a Specific Format option.
- Click Save.
- Edit the question again and click the Options tab.
- Reselect the Require an Answer to This Question or Validate Answer for a Specific Format option.
- Click Save.
The error message will now appear in the current survey language.
Right-to-Left (RTL) Languages
You can change the survey language to RTL languages such as Arabic and Hebrew and write survey question text from right to left. However, at this time there's no way to adjust the survey layout to display question numbers, labels, and navigation from right to left.
