The Slider question lets respondents rate an item or statement on a numerical scale by dragging an interactive slider.

To set up a Slider question:

  1. Drag and drop Slider into your survey from the Build section.
  2. Enter question text.
  3. Adjust the settings under the Edit and Options tabs.
  4. Click Save.

TIP! Include instructions that help your respondents answer the question correctly. We suggest something like Drag the slider to the preferred position, or enter a numerical rating in the textbox.

Under the Edit and Options tabs, you can adjust the following settings specific to the Slider question.

Setting
Tab
Description
Scale Range LabelsEditEdits the text labels for the left side, center, and right side of the slider. Editing the Scale Range Labels doesn't affect the range or validation of the question—it only changes the text labels.

The Scale Range Labels may update automatically when you change the Scale Range—depending on what you've customized so far:
  • If you've already edited the Scale Range Labels, then they won't automatically update if you change the Scale Range.
  • If you haven't edited Scale Range Labels yet, they will update automatically if you change the Scale Range.
Scale Range

Options

Limits the range of answers the question will accept. You can set the Scale Range at a minimum of -1,000,000 and a maximum of 1,000,000. The default Scale Range is 0 to 100.
Step SizeOptionsControls the interval the slider moves by.

A Step Size of 1 (the default) means respondents can drag the slider to any integer that falls within the minimum and maximum values of the Scale Range. For example, with a range from 0 to 5, they can use the slider to choose 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.

If you change the Step Size to 5, the slider goes by 5's as you drag it. For example, with a range from 0 to 20, respondents can use the slider to choose 0, 5, 10, 15, or 20. Or, if they want to choose something in-between, they can type any integer within the Scale Range, like 11 or 19, into the numerical input box.
Start PositionOptionsControls the default position of the slider when the respondent first sees the question.
Hide Numerical Input BoxOptionsHides the numerical input textbox that appears by default next to the slider bar.

This is useful if you're using words instead of numbers for your Scale Range Labels, since it won't be immediately clear to respondents that you're measuring your results on a numerical scale.

Under the Edit and Options tabs, you can further customize the question in the following ways:

Before you send out your survey, preview your survey design to see what your survey will look like to respondents.

Respondents can answer a Slider question in three ways:

  • Click and drag the slider to the desired position.
  • Type a numerical answer directly into the textbox.
  • Click anywhere on the track—the slider will jump directly to that position.

Until someone clicks the slider and moves it themselves, or enters an answer into the textbox, the question will be considered unanswered or skipped. This helps prevent your results from being skewed toward the rating associated with the default Start Position. Respondents need to take action on the question in order to record a response for it.

If someone selects a rating but then decides to remove their answer, they can click Clear to clear their response and reset the question to an unanswered state. The slider will go back to the default Start Position.

We'll calculate the average rating in the Analyze Results section—just look at the Average Number column in your data table. Here's how we calculate the average:

You can also click Responses to view the individual ratings that respondents entered. From there, click View respondent's answers below any answer to jump to the respondent's entire individual response.

If the results from a Slider question are missing from your export, select Open-ended responses in the export options and try again.
