Embedding Questions in Email Invitations

If you're using a supported question type as the first question in your survey, you can embed it in your Email Invitation. As soon as a respondent clicks an answer option in the email, they'll be sent to the first page of your survey to continue taking the survey.

TIP! If you're using a supported question type and your survey meets the design requirements, you'll see the Embed first question checkbox. If not, you won't see it.

How to Embed

To embed a question in an email invitation:

  1. Go to the Design Survey section of your survey.
  2. Add a supported question type to the very beginning of page 1.
  3. Make sure your survey meets the design requirements. Don't enable any option that would disqualify the question or you won't see the Embedded option!
  4. Go to the Collect Responses section of your survey.
  5. Create an Email Invitation.
  6. Compose your message and make sure the Embed first question option is checked.
  7. Click Edit Message to customize the text that appears before the question in the email or to change the message format.
  8. Click Save to save and preview your message. You can preview a desktop and mobile version of your email by clicking the computer and mobile phone icons in the lower-left corner of the message preview.
To see the Embedded option when composing your message, please make sure (1) you're using a supported question type as the first question and (2) your survey meets the design requirements.

Survey Behavior

When a respondent clicks an answer choice in the email, we send them to the first page of your survey so they can continue answering the rest of your questions. They'll see their response to the first question pre-selected in SurveyMonkey. Respondents need to click Next on the first page to save their responses and trigger any logic in your survey.

If you're sending a test email to preview the survey, we don't pre-populate the response in the survey preview since we don't actually collect any responses in survey previews.

Supported Question Types

To embed a question in an email invitation, you need to use one of the following supported question types as the first question on page 1 of your survey:

Survey Design Requirements

To embed a question in an email invitation, you must meet these survey design requirements before you can see the Embedded option in Email Invitation:

  • You must use a supported question type as the first question on page 1 of your survey—you can't add anything from the BUILDER menu (like an Intro Page or Text) in front of the question.
  • You can't use Page Randomization or Block Randomization on page 1 of the survey.

Additionally, the settings and options you've applied on the question you want to embed might disqualify it (meaning you won't see the Embed first question option in Email Invitation) or cause it to rend differently in the email than what you see in your survey design.

Multiple Choice Questions
  • You can't insert an image or video in an answer choice on the question you want to embed.
  • You can't enable Quotas on the question you want to embed.
  • If you enable the Randomize, Flip, or Sort Choices option on the question you want to embed, you can't randomize or flip answer choices, but you can alphabetize them.
  • You can't enable the Adjust Question Layout option on the question you want to embed.
  • You can't enable Question Text A/B Test option on the question you want to embed.
  • You can’t select the checkbox to add an “Other” answer option or comment field on the question you want to embed. To include “Other” as an answer choice, just click the plus sign to add an extra answer choice to the list. If you need more info, you can add Question Skip Logic to this answer choice and send respondents to a follow-up Single Textbox question once they click Next on the first page of your survey.
  • If you changed the layout of the question to 2 columns, 3 columns, or horizontal, it'll be displayed as 1 column in the email.
Star Rating Questions
  • You can use the Star, Smiley, or Heart icons on the question you want to embed, but, due to email client compatibility, you can't use the Thumb icon.
  • You can't add Other as an answer option for comments on the question you want to embed.
  • You can't enable Question Text A/B Test option on the question you want to embed.
  • You can't use image or video rating labels on the question you want to embed.
  • You can choose a scale from 2 to 10, however, questions with larger scales are not mobile responsive—they'll be static in the email, so people will have to scroll to see the full scale.

Why does the email look different than what I see in SurveyMonkey?

If you update your survey design after scheduling your message and it no longer meets the requirements, we'll send the default Standard template.

Email clients can render HTML messages differently, which can cause HTML Template or Custom HTML messages to display differently than what you expect.

Additionally, when you embed questions in an email they may display differently in the email. Please review the info in the section above on Survey Design Requirements for the question type you're embedding.
