Taxes on SurveyMonkey Purchases

Depending on your billing location, taxes may be included in the price of subscriptions, renewals, and other purchases, or it may be added as a separate line item on your invoice. If you don’t see your billing country listed below, SurveyMonkey doesn't add taxes to your purchase price. It’s your responsibility as a consumer or business to pay any applicable taxes to your local government, as needed.

You can find your invoices in the Transaction History tab of the My Acount page. Invoices include the applicable tax for your billing location, the price of the plan, and the total amount you paid.

Some organizations and businesses may be exempt from sales tax. If you're currently receiving a charity or nonprofit discount you aren't automatically exempt from paying sales tax, and need to complete the exemption process based on your location.

Visit our Legal Center for more information on how we assess and charge sales tax.

United States

SurveyMonkey is required to charge sales tax in certain U.S. locations to comply with local laws. If the billing address for your current payment method is located in a region that collects sales tax, you'll see the tax on your SurveyMonkey invoice starting February 1st, 2019.

This tax applies to all SurveyMonkey products, including SurveyMonkey Enterprise, SurveyMonkey Audience, and our other business solutions.

Tax Rate

Local tax rates vary depending on your state, county, and city. Make sure your current Billing Details are up to date so that we can charge the correct tax rate.

SurveyMonkey may not assess tax in some locations or on some of its services. If you want to estimate your potential sales tax, the best way is to use an online sales tax calculator.

Tax Exemption

Some organizations and businesses may be exempt from sales tax. If you believe your organization qualifies for tax-exempt status, apply for tax exemption before you upgrade or renew your account.

Once a valid certificate is linked to your account, future purchases will be exempt from tax. You can check your current exemption status in the Billing Profile section of the Billing Details page.

If you're charged tax after submitting your exemption information, please contact us.

European Union

If you're located outside of the United States, SurveyMonkey may be provided to you by our European subsidiary in Ireland, SurveyMonkey Europe UC.

To comply with laws in the European Union (EU), Value Added Tax (VAT) is included in the price of subscriptions, renewals, and other purchases when applicable.

  • The applicable VAT rate depends on your billing country.
  • If you're a VAT-registered business in the EU (other than Ireland), you can add a VAT registration number to exclude it from your purchase.
Adding a VAT Number
To exclude VAT from your purchase, you need to add your VAT number before making a payment—you can't retroactively apply a VAT number to a paid invoice.

If you're a VAT-registered business in the EU (other than Ireland), you can add a VAT registration number to exclude VAT from your purchase. There are two ways to do this:

  • On the checkout page, scroll to the Billing Details section. Click Apply VAT Registration Number. It will be applied to that payment and future payments made by your account.
  • In your account, go to your Billing Details. Scroll to the Billing Contact section and click Edit. From the window, click Add tax registration number. When you add or edit an existing VAT registration number here, it's applied to future payments.

If your VAT registration number is invalid, please refer to the proper VAT ID formats by EU member state on the European Commission website and try again.

VAT Invoices

You can find your invoices in your Transaction History. They include the applicable VAT rate for your billing country, the price of the plan with VAT included, and total amount you paid. Invoices are also emailed to the billing contact listed on the account.

If you see a notice that your invoice is pending, please wait 48 hours then check your Transaction History.

How VAT is Applied
Where to Add a VAT Number
Primary AdminIf the Primary Admin of a team adds a VAT number to their account, it's applied to the team billing—any invoices after the VAT number was added to the account will have VAT excluded. Any one-time purchases the Primary Admin makes after the VAT number was added to the account will also have VAT excluded. The Billing Details tab in the Billing Contact - Team section or during checkout.
UsersFor any one-time purchases made by individual Users in a team, the User needs to add a VAT number to exclude VAT from the purchase—it's not automatically applied based on the VAT number of the Primary Admin. The Billing Details tab in the Billing Contact - Individual section or during checkout.

SurveyMonkey Audience Purchases

If you already have a VAT number added to your SurveyMonkey account, we'll automatically apply it to your SurveyMonkey Audience purchase. If you don't have a VAT number added to your account, you can add one on the checkout page.

SurveyMonkey Audience is offered in all countries, except Brazil.

Irish Customers

If you're a VAT-registered business in Ireland, you can add a VAT number to your SurveyMonkey account, but this will not remove VAT costs from your price—we're required to collect VAT on all transactions with our customers located in Ireland.

You may be able to reclaim VAT by filing a VAT return with your government.

Brazil

Starting July 8, 2015, all new customers whose billing country is Brazil pay in Brazilian Reals (BRL), and SurveyMonkey is provided to you by our Brazilian subsidiary in São Paulo, SurveyMonkey Brasil Internet Ltda.

You'll need to add your CNPJ or CPF ID number on the checkout page when purchasing a SurveyMonkey plan. Adding your ID number does not exclude tax from your purchase.

  • CNPJ: Identifies a business or company in Brazil. After adding a CNPJ, we'll display additional business-related fields, like company name and purchase order number. See Contact Information for Payments for SurveyMonkey's CNPJ.
  • CPF: Identifies an individual consumer in Brazil.

You can edit your tax ID at any time by editing your payment method information in your Billing Details. Edits you make will be applied at your next renewal—edits won't be applied to any existing invoices or Nota Fiscal (NFSe).

Nota Fiscal (NFSe)

A Nota Fiscal is an invoice and financial document that includes all tax-related information required for reporting to local tax authorities in Brazil for goods and services. Starting July 8, 2015, we'll be issuing Nota Fiscal Eletrônica for Services (NFSe) from the São Paulo municipality for customers whose billing currency is BRL.

Your NFSe are stored in your Transaction History, along with your invoices and receipts.

  • If you signed up by credit card, your NFSe may be immediately available on the payment confirmation page. If your NFSe is pending and doesn't appear on the confirmation page, please wait 48 hours then check your Transaction History.
  • If you signed up by bank transfer, your NFSe will be available in your Transaction History within 48 hours after your payment is processed.
  • When your plan renews, your new NFSe will be found in your Transaction History within approximately 48 hours after your payment is processed.
