Star Rating Question

The Star Rating question lets respondents evaluate a statement on a visual scale of stars, hearts, thumbs, or smilies. A weight is assigned to each icon in the scale, so a weighted average is calculated in the Analyze Results section.

Video Overview

Creating a Star Rating Question

To set up a Star Rating question:

  1. Drag and drop Star Rating into your survey from the BUILDER section of the sidebar.
  2. Enter your question text.
  3. Adjust the settings under the Edit and Options tab.
  4. Click Save.

Question Settings

Under the Edit tab, you can adjust the following settings specific to the Star Rating question.

Setting
Description
ScaleThe number of icons displayed on your scale. By default, the scale is set to 5, but you can choose any number from 2 to 10.
ShapeThe icons that appear in the scale. You can choose from Star, Smiley, Heart, and Thumb.

Rating LabelsYou can enter optional text labels for any item on the scale. They'll appear right above each icon.
WeightsChanges the weights applied to each answer choice, which will affect how the weighted average is calculated in the Analyze Results section. By default, a rating of 1 star has a weight of 1, a rating of 2 stars has a weight of 2, and so on.
N/A ColumnGives respondents the option to select that the question doesn't apply to them.

Adding an N/A column is especially important if your question is required. If the question doesn't apply to someone, they should have the option to choose N/A so they can continue through your survey. The answers from respondents that select the N/A option will not be factored into calculating the weighted average.

Colors

Use the color dropdown to change the icons to yellow, green, blue, red, or black.

Spacing Between Icons

To make the icons display closer together, you can change the Question Width under the Options tab. However, keep in mind that the Question Width setting applies to surveys on all devices, so a question set to 50% width, for example, would also only take up 50% of the survey's width on mobile devices, which may make the icons look crowded.

Additional Options

Under the Edit, Options, and Logic tabs, you can further customize the question in the following ways:

Survey Behavior

Before you send out your survey, preview your survey design to see what your survey will look like to respondents.

Answering the question is easy—to give a rating of 4 stars, for example, a respondent would click the fourth star to select it. The first, second, third, and fourth stars will fill in, and we'll record the answer as the weight assigned to the star they selected.

There's no way to enter a half-star rating.

TIP! If you send your survey by Email Invitation, you may be able to embed a Star Rating question in your email so respondents can answer with just one click.

Analyzing Results

Weighted Average vs. Distribution Chart

By default, the bar chart will reflect the Weighted Average—the average star rating that respondents gave. We calculate this average using the same formula we use to calculate the weighted average for Matrix/Rating Scale questions—see the Analyzing Results section of the Matrix/Rating Scale Question article for details.

If you're interested in seeing how many people chose 1 star, how many people chose 2 stars, and so on, you can change the Depth setting of your chart to Distribution instead. This will chart the distribution of responses across answer choices.

Chart & Data Table Labels

In distribution charts for the Star Rating question, labels display differently depending on how you used rating labels in the survey design:

  • If your Star Rating question has no rating labels, the answer choice labels display the number of stars the respondent selected. For example, the answer choice label for a rating of 2 stars would be "2", the answer choice label for a rating of 3 stars would be "3", and so on.
  • If your question has rating labels for all answer choices, every answer choice label displays the corresponding rating label that you entered in the survey design.
  • If your question has rating labels for some answer choices but not others, the answer choices without rating labels display as "(no label)". You can edit labels directly on the chart in the Analyze Results section, or go back to the Design Survey section to add rating labels to the question.

Chart Scale

The axis scale of the weighted average chart may not match the scale of your Star Rating question automatically. To change the scale of your chart, adjust the Min and Max setting in your chart's Display Options. For example, if your Star Rating question uses a scale of 5 stars, change the Max to 5 so that the scales match.
